Slade Dale’s collection of photos taken during his ownership of the BERRY from 1931 to 1967, the year he donated her to Mystic Seaport.

EMMA C. BERRY loaded with RR ties, anchored probably at Chincoteague, VA, December 5—8, 1940. Twelve RR ties were lost off the VA coast on a very rough night of sailing December 4—5, and EMMA was also almost lost. The cargo and rough weather apparently also opened some seams and she would never carry freight again. (See .031)Date:12/1940

EMMA C. BERRY at the Morton Johnson Yard, on the railway, Point Pleasant, NJ, was hauled October 28, 1931. EMMA would be re—launched on November 24th, but would stay on the railway cradle until she swelled up. While hauled out, according to the ship's log notes, the caulking was reworked, the motors were removed, the motor beds and bulkheads and ceiling were removed, the stone and pebble ballast were removed, and numerous visitors came to admire and inspect. Note: Brand new white sails and dory like tender that appears to have come with EMMA. (See also .003, .008, .030, .033)Date:1931

The ship's log notes: "Under way shortly after 8 o'clock, had some delay getting into channel due to low tide, got through lock and stopped for ice, eggs, at store, gas at South Atlantic Marine Basin (Note JVH: Motor Boating, Sept. 1938 mentions SAMB as stop in Chesapeake — Albemarle Canal after lock), then a beautiful day's sail threw the dredged cut, making a couple of miles an hour under foresail alone�.. even got up energy enough to take some pictures, still and movies."
